Dispersed Camping in Winona State Forest

This site is relatively small and would not accommodate a large motorhome, although one or two of the campsites in the area might have been large enough to fit larger motorhomes. The road coming into the campsite is packed gravel/dirt. Even after seeing a fair amount of rain in the previous days before our stay, the road was not mucky and was still hard packed. Some of the entrances to campsites were mucky, however. The campsite was a clearing in the trees and had plenty of cut trees for firewood.

This doesn’t seem right at first like a destination, but it is a great stop-off if you are traveling I-81 through New York. Definitely beats a rest stop or truck stop! After researching a bit more, there are quite a few trails in the Winona State Forest for ATVing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. We were just here for a stopover night on our way to Canada, so we didn’t get a chance to explore the trails.

If you do visit this campsite, let us know what you thought of it! And as always, be sure to leave no trace and respect nature as you enjoy these campsites!
