Dog Boots: Ruffwear Summit Trex Review
What is better than sharing your Adventure in a Backpack with your best friend? Sharing it with them while they are protected and comfortable, that’s what! This review is of the Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots that we bought for our Doberman, Pyros. We bought them for her so she would be more comfortable on the trail, as she is not as light on her feet or as sure-footed as our Bichon, Sparta. Yes, I said Bichon. He is a great trail dog! But this is about Pyros and her boots…
The Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots are made for traction and paw protection for your four-legged friend. They also have a nice gaiter that stretches up the leg to keep dirt and rocks out of the boots. The rubber sole is tough enough to protect from rocks and debris, but also flexible enough to let the dog’s paw move around. There are more rigid boots for more extreme conditions, but we do not take our pups on anything that would require those types of boots.
Fitting the Dog Boots
The biggest thing for these boots is that you get the right size. We lucked out and got them right the first time, but I would suggest keeping your receipt in case you need to exchange once or twice. There is a nice little measuring guide on the back of the box, or you can watch the video on how to measure here:
We had the right size right away, so we put them right onto Pyros. To put them on, make sure the dog’s toes are not sticking out and slide them on her paw. Then pull the Velcro straps tight and get going! Pyros did not like them at first. She acted like there was something wrong with her feet. Once we got outside and started running around, she stopped noticing them, though, and started walking normally. They fell off of her a few times, but we just had to get used to putting them on really tight. Once we figured that out, it was great.
Dog Boots On the Trail
We took her out wearing the Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots for the first time on a short but very steep hike in the Clear Creek Canyon near Golden, CO. Both Pyros and the boots did very well. We had the boots on very tight so that they would not come off. Although they did not come off, the boots did slip around a little on her foot when she was on the very loose terrain. A quick readjustment fixed her right up and we were off again.
In all, the Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots are a great investment if you are taking your dog out on rough terrain. They provide the right balance between comfort and protection, and they are easy to get on and off of the dog. Make sure to check and adjust every once in a while out on the trail, but overall, they are a great product for your best friend. Pyros knows now that when we put her boots and pack on, we are about to go on an Adventure in a Backpack!
